Taxation, debt and even what to wear!

If you run a small or medium sized business, we want to give you all the help you need this spring. This ezine includes an article about what to do if you are in debt. There is also information about a great event run by HM Customs and Revenue coming up in Dundee (covering more than just taxation by the way). And there's the chance to find out what not to wear if you want to win that contract. Pick and choose the help, support and advice that applies to you.

Tanya Ewing
Ewgeco is a revolutionary device that will make it very easy to see how much electricity, gas and water a household or business is using.

Ewgeco was invented by Tanya Ewing of Perth who, as a sufferer of Lyme Disease needed to keep her home at a constantly warm temperature. When Tanya Ewing's innovative idea won £1000 as the Tayside regional winner in the Business Idea competition, she was able to use the money to make a video to promote the business.

Tanya is pictured here with her baby son, Coll, who arrived in the midst of all the business excitement.

Parental rights

From 1 April, the Work and Families Act gives greater pay and leave entitlement to new parents and pregnant women. Do you know how the changes affect you and your business?

  • Women entitled to a year of maternity leave, regardless of the length of service.
  • Paid maternity leave will be extended from 6 to 9 months.
  • More flexibility for men and women to share time off by 2008.

"You need to ensure you are up to date with parental rights," says Alan Phillips, employment helpline manager at Croner Consulting. "Employment tribunals make large awards against employers who ignore the rules. You cannot afford to be ignorant."
